Manchester Drive-in
In a curious repetition, the angles of the abandoned movie screen echo the angles of the window dividers in the previous post.
The goal here was to render the picture with the narrow range of contrast found in tintypes, and to suggest the metallic tone of those historic photographs as well.
Abandoned drive-ins can be found throughout the US, and like so many things here, they seem to be fading into ancient history.

View From Factory Window

The view here takes us through windows that haven’t been cleaned in years, out to the pool formed where the Farmington River meets the historic dam in Collinsville. The cupola was the crowning architectural feature on a factory complex that thrived through the 19th century, a manufacturing center for blades and axes and other sharpened tools.
At first, I thought I’d shoot this picture straight on, but angling it and including part of the window sill had the effect of inviting in a story.

Bungalow Shades
I took this picture on Sunday afternoon with the late afternoon light filtering through the June woods. The historic bungalow serves as the administration building for Paugnut State Forest and is commonly known as the “Burr Pond Bungalow.”
Like many similar park buildings, the cabin was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps during FDR’s Work Projects era (1933-1937). The stone and wood structure is in northwest Connecticut, but would fit in well on the rim of the Grand Canyon.
I selected a coffee tone for this picture because the bungalow’s 90+ years deserves it. And the square format seemed to say, “I’ve settled here to blend into these woods for good.”

Leaning In

The three landscapes are from a week ago; taken at Phillips Pond here in New Hartford.
Today we’re being visited by the fifth winter storm of the season, and this one has what it takes to refashion perspective. It’s currently 4°f; 12 to 18″ inches of snow (in progress and could go higher). The storm is blanketing a huge swath of the northeast, turning to freezing rain along the coast.
