View From Factory Window

The view here takes us through windows that haven’t been cleaned in years, out to the pool formed where the Farmington River meets the historic dam in Collinsville. The cupola was the crowning architectural feature on a factory complex that thrived through the 19th century, a manufacturing center for blades and axes and other sharpened tools.

At first, I thought I’d shoot this picture straight on, but angling it and including part of the window sill had the effect of inviting in a story.

  1. An excellent choice of framing that offers historical insight, with sharpness extending to both the interior and exterior. In the past, this type of cupola was found in Sweden on both industrial sites and farms, housing a large cast-brass bell used to signal the start and end of the workday—and, ideally, the midday break as well.

    1. I’m not sure if there was a similar brass bell in this one, but I’m guessing there was. The nearby city of Waterbury was nicknamed “the brass city” and it’s possible that such a bell was made there.
