  1. The second image in the series looks at wood shavings on fresh snow. This is the work of a Pileated Woodpecker who has been shredding the tree in search of larvae. The Pileated is the largest woodpecker in North America (assuming the slightly larger Ivory-billed is actually extinct).

When I snowshoed past here yesterday, it occurred to me that the shavings would fit nicely into the theme. An exposure was made; one that would barely be worth noting, were it not for the circumstances.

  2. A wood shaving sprinkle like shattered glass… Yea Pileateds! I love them! Ours come to a small suet feeder – what fun it is to see them fly at it and get a grip, their big bodies hanging off as they destroy the suet cake.

    1. We’ve had a female in the yard the last few weeks, although not every day. I’m thinking these wood shavings are probably her work. Loved your description. They are truly birds from another realm

      1. They are…and their call!

Once on a trail in Deception Pass SP I happened on one flailing away at a log on the ground beside the path. The bird was so engrossed it didn’t see me until the last minute. It was so cool to see it that close, absorbed in its task, at ground level.
