It’s interesting to see what’s hidden underwater, changes depending on how the water surface freezes. Light refraction and color, deformation of shapes and ice structures interact. We seem to be in the same temperature zone at the moment, but the ice formations can still really surprise me. Never the same from year to year.
These pictures are from our vernal pool and the small pond nearby. Both have been receiving flow from an intermittent stream (that has its own ice), so there’s been some shape-shifting and occasional thaws. Back in the woods, there’s a larger pond that’s been pretty much frozen for the last three weeks. That’s “Phillips Pond” in some of my recent posts.
Have your December temperatures been above normal?
…those leaves under the ice are mostly from red oaks
Fare above normal I’m afraid..
Yeah; it’s depressing
I love these, love what you’ve done with that frozen world. Hans describes it all well, but I imagine he’s an expert!
