Actually, I think this one’s a Black Birch. Close relative; less peeling. When you scratch a stem there’s a scent of root beer.

Thanks Mike, I like your comment. Since I only took one exposure here, the horizontal view was intuitive, as were the decisions to use the normal lens and shallow depth of field.
It’s almost mysterious, the way the background branches meld into the bark texture and reach across it. So much is unexpected here – the format, as mentioned above, the choice of this particular section of tree trunk, the fine texture of the bark….
