Cathedral Valley

Grand County UT c. 1994

This is the first of a group of scans I’m working on from unpublished film images taken around thirty years ago. This scene was just outside Capitol Reef National Park. I’ve included a file here to show the original border of the film, and on the left hand side you can make out the code notches from the Hasselblad film holder. The image was captured with a 903 SWC on 120 color negative film, and converted to black and white.

  1. Converted to black and white, you can be moved to different countries and landscapes. Perfect result, but it is simplified by the fact that the camera is Swedish …. 😉

    1. That’s an interesting observation about how the grayscale brings a feeling of familiarity to places. Yes great Swedish camera… nothing else quite like it.

  2. Outstanding image, John. I’ve always admired the Hasselblad line of cameras but I never had one. I did do some large format and medium format work years ago and it was juch a joy to work on. I hope you are enjoying your work converting these to digital so they can be shared easily. Good luck!

    1. Thanks Ken. Aside from the Hasselblads, the only other 120 cameras I ever owned were the Yashicamat 124G (which I believe you had as well), and two Fuji 645 cameras (the S and the W).

  3. Another striking composition…I love the way these photos retain lots of detail without looking “crunchy.” Thanks for showing them – looking forward to more, hopefully.
